Woodrow Blagg (1946–2023)

Woodrow Blagg was a master of contemporary Western art, renowned for his monumental graphite (pencil) drawings depicting the rugged beauty of Texas ranch life.

His work reflects 30 years of firsthand experience living and working alongside cowboys, cattle, and the vast landscapes of northwest Texas.

“It was a real connection with the land. The silence and all of the openness was very impressive. I would go back to the studio and start a four- or five-foot drawing, but that didn't work. I just kept adding pieces of paper on the end of what I'd been completing, and three weeks later, I had a rough sketch that was twenty-one feet long. I found that scale worked. It connected to the experience that I had.”

Woodrow Blagg's art has captured the spirit of the American cowboy in the present modern-day life as few ever have. His portrayals of that existence are stunning and breathtaking in the scale and skill of which he challenged himself as an artist and a man. Woodrow's experiences were from his frontline encounters with life on some on the biggest ranches in Texas and his friendships with active working cattle herds and the cowboys who managed them. His commitment that encompassed over fifty years consisted largely of epic scale pencil drawings, that sometimes spanned 15 feet across that expressed the vast ranges that he immersed himself in. Blagg spared no quarter in his dedication to visual and spiritual exploration of the daily life of the American cowboy in contemporary times. The end result of that prodigious effort is a large body of work that transcends the world of western art and keeps alive the spirit of the American cowboy for all time. Woody was the first of our family to start making art and at the age of six Dennis and I followed his lead he had a five year head start but we were all in as youngsters and never looked back. As the years passed, we each became absorbed in our own separate visions very aware of each other's quest and remained challenged and inspired by that experience.
